Join Turvey History Society on a guided walk exploring the history of Turvey as part of Heritage Open Day 2024. Discover how places in the landscape today reveal the routes, connections and networks of people in the past. Two walks will be provided: one around the village (1 hour, 0.5 mile); the other (2 hours, 3 miles) extends the village walk into the countryside. The same walks will be repeated in the afternoon. Turvey History Society was formed in 2017 with the aim of researching, recording and celebrating the history of this village. Our aim in this event is to show how places in the landscape today can provide an insight into the routes, networks and connections that shaped this village and were important in the lives of its people over the centuries. We will explore this through two guided walks around Turvey and the surrounding countryside in which our local history, spanning the Bronze Age to the 21st century, will be revealed. There will also be an exhibition in All Saints Church to accompany the event. Visitors will discover links with Viking invaders, the Gunpowder Plotters, the Jarrow Crusade and even the BBC! We will tell the story of transport - by river, Drovers road, stagecoach and railway, and explore other connections that have linked the village to the world beyond, for example through local industries, during the World Wars and through innovations and changing ideas and practices. Buildings and places in the landscape will also be described to show how people have come together in different ways over time to form the networks that create the fundamental sense of community in village life. Turvey itself is a delightful village with options for refreshments including two pubs and a community cafe in the church. Numbers will be limited so booking is essential. Please book by email at turveyhistory@gmail.com by Wednesday 4th September. Please state morning or afternoon.

Ampthill has the unusual distinction of once having had two members of the nobility living very closely together in individual grand houses. This walk visits both houses, and tells their stories, from who they were built for and also one of the houses' demise. Not surprisingly, having two egotistical noblemen in such close proximity caused a certain amount of friction! This walk will take about 2.5 hours
